Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, a sport, and a form of fitness focusing on the art of grappling. BJJ was formed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting fundamentals. Those arts were taught to Carlos Gracie and Luiz França by Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake.Carlos Gracie is known as the Founder and Creator of Modern Jiu Jitsu, also known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, or Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has exploded around the world and is recognized as its own art thanks to the experimentations, practices, and adaptation from the Judo knowledge of Carlos and Helio Gracie. Carlos, and Helio Gracie have passed their knowledge on to their extended family, and from there it’s gone on to be taught around the world!
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, or weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. Successful BJJ is reliant on proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat opponents. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments gi / no-gi, and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring in Jiu-Jitsu is usually referred to as “rolling”. Live drilling plays a major part in training, Jiu-Jitsu has a ranking system in the form of different color belts. Kids below a certain age have a separate belt system than adults.
